Different Opportunities in the Fitness Industry

A career in the fitness industry can be very rewarding.  As well as keeping yourself fit and active, you will be helping others achieve their fitness goals.  However, there is more you can do in the fitness industry than be a personal trainer in a gym.  Here are just a few different opportunities in the fitness industry.

Gym Instructor

Gym instructors are usually the full time staff members employed to help members (if needed) in the gym.  The most basic qualification, you will be able to write basic programs and inductions when members join the gym for the first time.  You will also be able to conduct health screenings and checks to ensure the members are fit and able to exercise.  Within the UK, the qualifications required to become a gym instructor is the Level 2 in Gym Instructing.

Studio Instructor

Studio instructors have a physically demanding role, instructing classes for members within a gym.  The most common classes you will find are Les Mills classes. These classes cover a range of different training styles, with exact choreographed exercises instructed to music.  In order to teach Les Mills classes, instructors must have their Level 2 in Gym Instructing, along with the relevant class based qualification.  Other popular classes other than those created by Les Mills, are Zumba, Spinning, as well as Yoga and Pilates.

Bootcamp Instructor

Bootcamp Instructors conduct exercise programmes with their clients outdoors.  Usually using circuit based training, clients will undertake more bodyweight orientated exercises.  However, often bootcamp instructors use other portable pieces of equipment such as battle ropes, kettlebells, or boxing equipment.  Bootcamps are becoming an increasingly popular trend in the fitness industry as clients enjoy exercising outdoors, and there are very little start up costs for the instructor.  Bootcamp instructors must have their Level 3 in Personal Training qualifications.

Cruise Ship or Resort Trainer

Fitness does not stop when you go on holiday! Most hotels, resorts and cruise ships have gym or class facilities so that their customers can still exercise on their holiday.  Trainers are always in demand to work at these facilities, and it is a great way to go out and see the world.

Online Trainer

With the growth of social media, and the increasing demand for affordable fitness advice, the online personal training world has grown massively.  Whether it is writing online programmes, providing nutritional guidance, or even just motivation, online trainers are helping their clients get in shape from wherever they are located.
