Start a New Career in 2018

As the saying goes – new year, new career. With January on the horizon, what better time than now to start a new career in 2018.
If the January blues is about to set in – take a step back and think to yourself, do I enjoy my job? Is there a future in what I am doing? Do I want to do this for the rest of my life?
If you are starting to question yourself, then it might be time to consider changing careers. Usually at this point you fall into one of two categories.
I know what career I should be doing…but
If you know what your perfect career is, then why are you not doing it? It is quite common for people to know what their calling in life is, but they have not quite taken the steps to follow through with it. Maybe the job is very competitive, or maybe there is a lot of risk involved – financially. However, if you know this is the career for you it is worth the risk – take the plunge. Looking back when you are old, you would much rather say you tried doing what you love, rather than never attempting it at all. Sometimes in life it requires taking a step backwards, before you can take a step forwards.
So what to do from here? Well plan out your exit strategy. Perhaps a new career involves new qualifications or training. Do some research and find out the best ways to do this. Online study is very popular as it quite often allows you to re-train in a new discipline whilst still working and earning a living. Alternatively, you could look for a fast track course to get it done and dusted as quickly as possible. Other things to consider is applying for your perfect position / career. If you already have experience then great, but perhaps it is worth volunteering, or being involved in the occupation in some way, so that you have got some experience to show to potential employers. Next up is taking the leap and going for it.
I know I don’t like my job, but I don’t know what career I want…
Don’t worry, you are not alone! It is very common to not know what career to go into. You might love films, but does that mean you should be an actor? You might love animals, but does that mean you should be a Vet? There is certainly more to it than that, and some steps you can take to start a new career in 2018.
First of all, have a think about what skills you have – what are you actually good at? Being good at your job often leads to happiness and progression, so look for careers that suit your abilities. If you are great at maths, then perhaps you have a future in stockbroking, of if you are hands on, then perhaps you might be suited to a trade. Think about what your skills are, and this can narrow down your search.
Of course you can do research into particular industries, but the best way is going out and speaking to people working within an industry. For example, in the film industry there may be jobs in areas you never thought existed – and they might match your skills perfectly. You never know until you ask.
Finally, start taking some steps towards you goal. If you just think about it, then it will never happen. If there is a career you are interested in, studying or getting your qualifications (as long as it is not too expensive!) could be a good way to increase your knowledge in that area. Alternatively, you could look at volunteering, or being involved in the sector you are curious about. Either way, take some action to get the ball rolling.
So whether you know what career you want, or are still looking at your options, 2018 marks the perfect time to take the next steps in your career. Don’t settle for average, start a new career in 2018.
