So you are considering a career in the fitness industry, but then you think, what qualifications do I need to become a Personal Trainer?
In simple terms, there are two main qualifications, the Level 2 in Gym Instructing, and the Level 3 in Personal Training. You must have these qualifications for knowledge, but also in order to be employed by any gym across the UK, or to get insurance to run your own fitness business.
There is no Level 1 in Personal Training – the qualifications start with the Level 2.
Level 2 – Gym Instructor
Don’t be tricked – the level 2 qualification must be completed first, before going on to the Level 3. A lot of training providers advertise the Level 3 course separately, or as a Diploma including both the Level 2 and 3 qualifications, so look carefully when considering your course options. By studying through Career College UK we keep things simple, our course includes the Level 2 and 3 combined.
You can work with just the Level 2 qualification; however your role is limited to that of a Gym Instructor. Within a gym you can help members, write basic programs and inductions. You can also conduct health screenings, and ensure the members are training correctly and safely. It could be tricky finding employment with just this qualification though – almost all fitness graduates study both the Level 2 and Level 3 qualification, so you will be competing with these higher qualified graduates for positions.
Level 3 – Personal Trainer
The Level 3 qualification enables you to work as a personal trainer. Within a gym you can conduct one on one sessions and train clients with specific goals – for example if they wanted to improve their fitness, loose weight or improve their flexibility. Once qualified, you are also able to set up your own business self employed within a gym, or externally. You must have your Level 3 qualification in order to get insurance to run your own business – public liability is very important to protect you and your business.
It is as easy as that!
