Why work in motorsport? It may seem obvious – fast cars, adrenaline and glamour, but a long term career in the motorsport industry requires a specific set of skills. Not everyone is going to be the next Lewis Hamilton, so the most popular job in the industry is working as an engineer – building and improving sports cars performance.
As a motorsport engineer, your job will be exciting and rewarding, and with any professional sport at the highest level there is a great earning potential. Working in a team environment creates its own pressures, but also for those that enjoy the thrills of competition, when you end up on top you will feel the satisfaction of a job well done.
Across the UK and the world, there is a huge number of different motor sport series, from the extremely technical cars in Formula 1, to NASCAR, Touring Cars and even rallying. Due to the huge variation in disciplines, and levels from local, national and to international, there should always be a job opportunity that matches your own standards and experience.
On a national scale the Motorsport Industry Association is the leading trade association, whilst the Federation Internationale De L’Automobile is the international governing body of motorsport. Both promote and help regulate motorsport, with a huge number of smaller networks and partnerships across the industry.
Whatever path you take, motorsport can be a fun and rewarding career.
